What you need to know before your trail

When the body of a half-clothed woman is discovered in an Edinburgh park, the police are quick to launch a murder investigation. However, the victim has not been reported missing so no one seems to know who she is.

When the body of a prominent clergyman is found, also in a park. Detective Sergeant Alice Rice wonders if the same killer is at work, and, if so, what the connection is between the apparently motiveless attacks.

A Guide to Edinburgh with Gillian Galbraith

Blackford Hill

“When she was within the confines of this park, she mused, the bustling metropolis of Edinburgh might as well not exist.” Well , if you head to this park and spend any amount of time in it, then you’ll understand why she said this. The views over the city are quite something and this is a valuable wide open space just a little way out of the city. The hillside walking trails are something else and now with this book, you can do a booktrail there as well! You absolutely have to visit the Royal Observatory to see even more of the surrounding area.

Leith

Not a nice part of the city if this novel is anything to go by. It’s the area where the docks are and where the prostitutes in the area stalk the streets. There are plenty dark and dank corners in and around this area:

By the lowest path, the Water of Leigh rushed along, tumbling over itself, in spate. Its cloudy water were flecked with an ochre-tinted foam , and a single tree-stump blocked half the stream, the city’s flotsam and jetsam collecting around it”

Edinburgh

The city is a maze of crime scenes mixed with scenic parks and gardens. Niddrie, or Leith might not be the places to go according to what happens in the novel. The Road to Hell, the clue is definitely in the title, takes the policewoman along a trail that leads to some of Edinburgh’s darkest and scariest corners.
