First Monday at Goldboro Books
Don’t like Mondays? First Monday is going to change all that if it hasn’t already. Crime fiction and the toppest of top authors have a special stage of their own now – what started in what I like to call diagon Alley, the home of Goldsboro books takes place in London and today it’s at the City University London.
So who is going?
Sophie Hannah, author of chilling psychological thrillers and her second foray into the world of Hercule Poirot with Closed Casket
Tim Weaver, bestselling author of Richard and Judy selection Never Coming Back will be telling us all about his latest novel: Broken Heart.
Rod Reynolds, author of the much-praised Texarcana Noir debut The Dark Inside will be riding in on his horse (probably) to lasso the crowd and chat about Black Night Falling.
Jane Corry, journalist and now top writer who’s just featured in Dead Good Books’ #Summersix with fab title My Husband’s Wife
What will happen?
Who knows. Crime writers are noted for their random acts of chatter and plotting so if one of them goes quiet and seems to be looking at you, you may end up as a victim in their next novel.
What should you take with you?
Books for signing, cake and beer for bribing and Sophie Hannah and Jane Corry are keen swimmers so a gift of cocktail to transport them to a pool somewhere exotic would be much appreciated. Rod Reynolds is partial to a ranch steak…..
Who sets their novels in the most unusual location?
Sophie Hannah set The Mongram Murders in a fictional hotel which has its own website and seemed very real indeed. Rod takes you to a place straddling two US states. Tim Weaver shows you the dark side of a city as well as local beauty spots and Jane – well, she takes you into the marriage from hell…
Who should you be most wary of?
Well, Rod is hardcore – his protagonist is a lone wolf hunter and so Rod probably rides horses and lassoes people for fun. He writes about the state of Texas, hunting criminals in the remote desert so he probably has survival skills to boot.
Sophie Hannah might just appear from somewhere, she’s the Queen of quirky and chilling plots and has just written a book with caskets in it – so… Having said that I once met her coming out of a lift – not long after I’d read The Monogram Murders which features a lift on the cover and that freaked me out. I’ve just chatted with her in a cafe with gothic memorabilia everywhere too….
Jane Corry knows about twisty plots and how to conceal things so…..
Tim Weaver might take you a beauty spot and make you disappear.
Things to ask them?
Sophie Hannah booktrail chat – The Booktrail chat included: Poirot, thrillers, cheese and swimming
Rod Reynolds booktrail chat included- Ranch Steak, the true story behind Texarkana and his two novels, oh and that Zodiac film..
Why should I go to First Monday?
Well, Mondays are not the best days are they? The BoomTown Rats were even going to shoot the whole day down!. But Goldsboro books have found THE best way to liven up the first Monday of the month.
