Travel Guide

Byrd’s world

Author’s note:

From the moment Byrd and Bennett landed their plane on the icy runway in Spitsbergen on May 9, 1926, their claim of being the first to fly over the North Pole has been debated – with no end in sight
The Italian and Norwegian newspaper reporters who were there to cover Amundsen’s slight over the North Pole were the first to question Byrd’s claim. It’s no wonder, During the time that Byrd was an explorer, there was a lot at stake. Explorers were celebrated, larger-than-life superheroes, and whoever was the first to get there was assured fame and fortune

As soon as Byrd returned from the Arctic, he send his navigational records to the U navy and the National Geographic Society for verification. After carefully examining the report, they agreed that Byrd had reached the North Pole. To this day, they have never wavered in their decision.

Byrd’s diary can be found at the research centre of Ohio State University and can be requested for further study.
