2000s: What if murder is your only way out?
Single mom Kristy Tucker works as a press agent for the Texas Department of Corrections handling everything on death row from inmate interviews, to chronicling the last moments during an execution. Her job exposes Kristy to the worst of humanity and it’s one that’s beginning to take its toll.
So when Kristy meets Lance Dobson, her son’s martial arts instructor, she believes she’s finally found her happy ending. She’s wrong.
Kristy soon discovers that Lance is a monster. Forced to endure his verbal and physical abuse, Kristy is serving her own life sentence . . . unless she’s willing to take matters into her own hands. Perfectly poised to exploit the criminal justice system she knows so well, Kristy sets out to get rid of Lance – permanently.
There really is only one “landmark”if you like in this book – the Texas prison where death row inmates wait for their fate. The other, is the landscape of justice, and whether everyone on death row is as guilt as they seem. One woman who works at the heart of this systems sees its flaws but also the loops which can be taken advantage of.
The State of Texas execution chamber is the most active execution chamber in the United States, with some 537 executions since 1982, when the death penalty was reinstated in Texas. This is the world in which lives and breathes Kristy who is in charge of seeing to this prisoners, dealing with the press, their families and the aftermath of each execution. Every one she has to oversee and watch.
This is one prison, but the prison for her soon becomes her refuge as the world outside darkens when domestic violence comes to her door. Then the two worlds collide in unexpected ways. A prisoner comes to her aid, and her husband beats her. Two worlds, one outcome.
