In the dead of night, thirteen-year-old Charlie Bucktin is startled by a knock on his window. It’s Jasper Jones. Rebellious, mixed-race and solitary, And he needs Charlie’s help
The boys steal through town, and Charlie learns of Jasper’s horrible discovery. They are both burdened by a terrible secret and the weight of a town’s suspicion. Charlie feels his world closing in.
After this summer nothing will ever be the same again.
The real life town of Pemberton stood in for Corrigan in the film version of the novel.
The place here is not vital to the plot but rather the setting – ie how a mixed race teen who lives on both the outskirts of town and society can feel an outsider in so many other ways.
The town is small scale and is predominantly white so when the boys discover a secret, revelation of this secret could proof to be the ultimate separation of white and black.
Remember this is 1965, the Vietnam war is ongoing and so often people from this part of the world are not treated with respect.
