1990s: If a hitch hitchhiker in the outback and no one hears him, does he make a sound?
When American writer Tony Horwitz married his Australian bride, he was swept off his feet both by his new wife and his new home country. He feels inspired to explore Australia and so one day he does just that – heading out into the outback with a backpack and a dream.
What follows is an adventure in more ways than one
Horwitz sees the outback and the entire country to be fair, like no one else.
“It’s a hair-raising ride into the hot red center of a continent so desolate that civilization dwindles to a gas pump and a pub.”
Along the way, Horwitz discovers that the outback is as treacherous as it is colorful. As he winds his way to Queensland, Alice Springs, Perth, Darwin–and a hundred bush pubs in between, he sees just how unique and inhospitable yet fascinating the outback can be.
