2000s: Crime never sleeps in the city of Angels
Los Angeles can be a dangerous city – never more so than in the dead of night. Detective Renée Ballard, once one of the department’s young hotshots, now works ‘The Late Show’, the notorious graveyard shift at the LAPD.
It’s a thankless job keeping strange hours in a twilight world of tragedy and violence, handing over her investigations as the sun rises, never getting closure.
Some nights are worse than others. And tonight is the worst yet. Two cases: a brutal assault, and a multiple murder with no suspect.
Ballard knows it is always darkest before dawn. But what she doesn’t know is how deep her dual investigation will take her into the dark heart of her city, her department and her past…
Not the TV show, but the night shift for the LAPD where the team are first to respond to the various incidents throughout the night and early hours of the morning such as robberies, assaults, the occasional murder. The team just mops them up as it were however as the day shift does the real leg work and finalises the cases. Ballard and those who do the late show are often frustrated as a result.
The city streets are not friendly by any means. The first case concerns a transgender prostitute who was brutally beaten and left for dead. The amount of violence far exceeds anything the police have seen before.
Ballard, a single woman focused on her job, gives a unique view of the city’s streets and its dark dark underbelly.
