What you need to know before your trail

When Cassie accepts a job as companion to Frances, an old lady living in a remote Lancashire village, she hopes for a quiet life where she can forget herself, her past and most especially men. The last thing she expects is to be drawn into saving a community that seems determined to take her to its heart – and to resuscitate hers… Frances has lived a reclusive life at Ramblings, a Victorian Gothic mansion, for many years. So why now does she advertise for a companion and welcome strangers into her house? Barney is hiding away at Ramblings, forging a new life as a farmer after his medical career ended in scandal. He doesn’t trust the mysterious woman who comes to live with his rich aunt, especially when she starts to steal Frances’ affection – and maybe his own too… Can love, friendship, and the magic of Ramblings overcome the secrets of the past and unlock a brighter future?

Travel Guide

The Ribble Valley

Kate Field’s personal tour:

The book is set in the fictional village of Ribblemill, which as the name suggests, is located in the Ribble Valley, an area in the north east of Lancashire, centered around the market town of Clitheroe. The Ribble Valley tourism website describes the area as ‘somewhere rather special’ and I couldn’t agree more. Often described as the geographic centre of Great Britain, the area regularly features in lists of the top places to live in the UK.

The main towns, such as Clitheroe and Whalley, are charming places that boast a high proportion of independent shops, and are surrounded by villages and hamlets that look like they haven’t changed in centuries. One of my favourite villages is Waddington, just outside Clitheroe, which is a great spot to have a walk and a pub lunch; there’s a scene in the book where Cassie and Barney enjoy a pub lunch at a village with a stream flowing through it, which is based on Waddington.

There’s plenty of history in the area, including Clitheroe Castle, Whalley Abbey, and the Roman Museum in Ribchester. The stories about the Pendle witch trials are fascinating, and walking and driving trails are available to learn more about that time.
