Fifteen-year-old Morwenna lives in Wales with her twin sister and a mother who spins dark magic for ill. One day, Mori and her mother fight a powerful, magical battle that kills her sister and leaves Mori crippled. Devastated, Mori flees to her long-lost father in England. Adrift, outcast at boarding school, Mori retreats into the worlds she knows best: her magic and her books. She works a spell to meet kindred souls and continues to devour every fantasy and science fiction novel she can lay her hands on. But danger lurks… She knows her mother is looking for her and that when she finds her, there will be no escape.
The small Welsh village where magic happens! The library in particular plays a starring role as this is where Morwenna gets all of her books which allow her to escape
“It doesn’t matter. I have books, new books, and I can bear anything as long as there are books.”
“Libraries really are wonderful. They’re better than bookshops, even. I mean bookshops make a profit on selling you books, but libraries just sit there lending you books quietly out of the goodness of their hearts.”
Morwenna goes to school here and she’s keen to point out that it’s a tow and not a city. She gets a map of the town as soon as she arrives, noticing that everything seems to be made from the rose-pink stone.
The first thing she learns is the difference between high tea and afternoon tea. but she’s not impressed with the scones. She should go to The Gallery Tearooms!
Interestingly, this tower was built by King Henry III to protect Shrewsbury from Wales!
Why not set yourself the challenge of reading the books Morwenna does in the book?
