Four old university friends reunite for a hiking trip in the Scandinavian wilderness of the Arctic Circle. No longer young men, they have little left in common and tensions rise as they struggle to connect. Frustrated and tired they take a shortcut that turns their hike into a nightmare that could cost them their lives.
Lost, hungry and surrounded by forest untouched for millennia, they stumble across an isolated old house. Inside, they find the macabre remains of old rites and pagan sacrifices; ancient artefacts and unidentifiable bones. A place of dark ritual and home to a bestial presence that is still present in the ancient forest, and now they’re the prey.
Trekking in the northern part of Sweden in a valley of tall mountain, deep valleys and forests whose noises and wild animals send chills up your spine…is not a good idea. When you wander from that path, onto unfamiliar territory is even less wise. When you see a carcass of a creature torn apart and left hanging on a tree….even less so
This is a novel of exploration, of four friends who trek off the right path into the shadowy depths of the woods…..and who get horribly lost, start to fight and bicker with one another and soon fall fowl to the forest’s hidden and unforgiving soul.
There’s something about the Swedish forests, the strange lights of the Lapland forests that really chills. This is an area already awash with folkloric and supernatural mysteries and this one is full of them. What does lie behind those rustling leaves? Is there any place for sanctuary?
In reality there are actually some great treks and trails to discover here such as The Skaite national park. Just best not to take this book with you or read it before you go
