Sinclair’s Department store in London sells everything you can imagine and even things you can not.
Sophie is a poor girl who finds a job at the new and exciting department store. She tries hard and always does her best but she often doesn’t make a good impression on people as she’s shy and called different by the other shop girls.
However she gets on really well with Lilian at the store and Billy the store porter. The three friends make a great little team inside the store and out. Work at the store is hard but they find ways of making it fun.
But then one day Sophie is accused of stealing the Clockwork Sparrow and it’s up to her and her friends to prove her innocence.

Before you even go inside, this most famous department store in London –
“With its magnificent columns and ranks of coloured flags……it was more like a classical temple that had sprung up, white and immaculate against the smog and dirt of Piccadilly. The huge plate-glass windows were shrouded with royal-blue silk curtains, making it look like a stage in a grand theatre before the performance had begun.”
Once inside the marble entrance hall, as the crowds swarm in past the doorman, there’s a smell of bonbons like on Christmas morning, a magnificent fountain with marble mermaids, silvery tinkling of water…
The store is a wondrous place to be. Something to tickle your five senses as you gaze around you.
Those who work there have a hard but mostly enjoyable job. When one of the most valuable goods in the store is taken and Sophie accused, the challenge is to find the real culprit. Best friends Sophie and Lilian will do everything it takes to clear Sophie’s name and with Lilian’s spirit and determination, she is the one to have on your side!
The mystery of the missing Clockwork Sparrow is a mysterious trail through the store and its characters, with the duo of Sophie, Lilian as crime busting detectives of a special kind.
