Dowerby may appear like a small market town but it is in fact fictional although greatly influenced by Alnwick and the fair which takes place in the famous market square every year.

“It’s easy to find Dowerby, and lots of tourists do, every summer. Dowerby like every other town in England, has its castle, its haunted pub and its gift shops”

Medieval, Northern and a small town plagued with secrets and lies…This is a tight knit community where people are secretive and insular, quick to judge outsiders and even their own and where this insular, protected world is not one for new people or new things.

Maura meets Kim a reporter when she comes to the town to publicise the famous medieval fair. This fair actually teaks place in Alnwick each year and the star of the show is a dunking stand where women dressed in costume are dunked in water as they would have been many years ago to see if they were witches. Such a strange tradition it may be, but it soon becomes a scene of death. Maura flees – from both the town and her husband.

Now living in South London,  Maura faces up to her past and this is no easy task for her. Her past has finally  caught up with her and she fears for her life all over again. It is the town of Dowerby which she has never been able to escape – The location is key- it is her prison, her tiny cell where everyone knows everyone else’s business, where the curtains twitch and people stand and chat on street corners but where no-one ever sees anything or helps to make you feel welcome.

The story may centres around a small and local event in an even smaller town but the ripples show to jus what lengths people are prepared to go in order to hide the truth.
