What you need to know before your trail

Jónas is starting to feel that life hasn’t worked out the way he thought it would. Divorced and lonely, with nothing much to live for, he decides to buy a one-way ticket to the first place that comes to mind.

When he arrives at the strangely deserted airport, in the barren holiday resort , he ends up on the doorstep of Hotel Silence, it seems the ideal place to put an end to it all. There isn’t any dinner, the plumbing barely works, and the hotel staff seem somewhat distracted.

But as his relationship with May and her small son Adam grows into friendship, and he begins to understand the traumatic story of this war-torn country, Jónas discovers reasons to carry on.

Travel Guide

Iceland

The book opens in Reykjavík with a stark and cold and somewhat depressing view of the country.

The country however is obviously beautiful and stunning but also one covered in darkness and sadness for some people. The sky as well as the people are melancholic. A country sad and lonely and Jonas who wants an escape.

The Balkans?

“This part of the book could be set anywhere as it’s kept vague on purpose. What’s important is that the country is destroyed and that people are tying to make the best of what they can to survive.  Hotel Silence stands y the shore, by the shore, an hour’s drive from the airport, but the driver explains that the roads are still a mess and that we have to take a detour through the city, which will prolong our journey by half an hour. Parts of the route haven’t been mapped, he says. There are some hills in the distance but otherwise the country is flat.”

Jonas arrives in the bleak environment just at the same time  dust and destruction have covered the country. The city, the streets, the people are in chaos and some of he houses are missing their facades, just like dolls houses.
