A man is arrested after a road accident in the small town of Avechot. His shirt is covered in blood. Could this have anything to do with a missing girl called Anna Lou? Detective Vogel is on the case, but his unconventional means of investigation end up unsettling the locals.
Also looming over Vogel is a case from his past that nearly destroyed his career. Determined not to lose again, he will do anything to solve the mystery surrounding Anna Lou’s disappearance. Then, a media storm hits the quiet town and Vogel is sure that the suspect will be flushed out. Yet the clues are confusing, perhaps false, and following them may be a far cry from discovering the truth at the heart of a dark town.

The village of Avechot is fictional yet set firmly in the Italian alps, not far from the border with Switzerland:
“The fir woods clung to the mountain slopes like the serried ranks of an army preparing to invade the valley. The valley was as long and narrow as an old scar, and through it ran a river. The River was an intense green, sometimes placid, at other times treacherous.
That was where Avechot was, bang in the middle of this landscape.
An Alpine village a few kilometres from the border. Houses with protruding roofs, a church with a steeple, a town hall, a police statin, a small hospital, a school, s couple of vars and a sports stadium.
The woods, the valley the river, the village. And a huge mine like a monstrous futuristic scar on the past and on nature. There was a restaurant just outside the built up area, by the side of the main road”

The Girl in the Fog is a very atmospheric read and even though the small village setting of Avenchot is fictional, it’s well described and very claustrophobic so that you feel as chilled as the characters do.
The book flitted from the date of the disappearance to before and after which can be confusing but worked well here. Not that the investigator Vogel was going to follow any kind of procedure anyway – he’s a law unto himself that one and I’m not sure he’s one of the best detectives I’ve ever encountered. The case is not about you Mr Vogel!
The village of Avechot becomes somewhat of a tourist shrine following the grim case and that brought a new angle to the already uncomfortable setting. this does happen of course in real life and really adds a shiver to proceedings. That and the fact that sometimes humanity and common sense doesn’t even seem to make an appearance in life. And that is what really shook me.
