Johnny Brooks drinks in the Rainham Working Men’s club at the start of the novel and it’s his local haunt on a Sunday. He’s Stepney born and bred but now lives in South Hornchurch and owns a successful builders merchants
Rainham is his haunt though and everyone knows him here. He’s got that certain something about him – quick with his mouth and fit of the gab and quick with his fists as he used to be a decent amateur boxer.
The housing estate/flats
“The lifts stank of urine, were covered in graffiti and, as usual, there was a sign on the door saying they were out of order”
This is the setting for the starting point of a life of crime. It’s the setting of criminal goings on, depravation, the search for fags and booze, the struggles to survive. Jason tries to escape this world but ends up swapping it for the murky world of violence and treachery. Jason considers himself a bit of a ‘Del Boy’ but this heart of gold is a valuable to many with dark hearts.
Be pleased that Mardyke Estate is not real.
