A chance meeting in the local pharmacy transforms the life of lonely, illiterate Octavio. He begins reading lessons and finds love and happiness for the very first time. But Octavio’s destiny lies elsewhere, as he will discover on a journey into the Venezuelan rainforest.
At the port of La Guaira on 20 August 1908, a ship from Trinidad dropped anchor off the Venezuelan coast unaware that it was offloading a plague which would trouble the country for half a century.
Within a week, a quarantine ward had been set up and a national epidemic declared. During the second week, the authorities announced there was to be a rat hunt,with s silver coin paid for every animal killed.
A local village where much of the action in the story is focused, Shacks which balanced on the side of the mountains, a church with no pope to consecrate the alter ad the apse. People judge a house buy the number of windows it had, Road names written on planks of wood, a people and a town which surrendered to a climate that knew no seasons”
