Travel Guide

Rome – 37AD

Gaius Julius Caesar

His youngest sister, is the narrator in this book and is one of the Emperor’s loyal followers. Gaius Caesar was Roman emperor from AD 37 to AD 41 and known as Caligula.

As a child, he acquired the nickname “Caligula” (meaning “little soldier’s boot”, the diminutive form of caliga) from his father’s soldiers during their campaign in Germania.

Conflict and more soon lead to Caligula being the sole male survivor. He accepted an invitation in AD 31 to join the emperor on the island of Capri, Caligula succeeded his adoptive grandfather as emperor in AD 37.

Ancient Rome

“We  lived in a stange state of tension in that grand vila north of Tome, in the green valley of the Tiber and away from the sink and the machinations of the wicked.”

Capri

Capri is shaped like a giant saddle, risingo out of the sea with horns jutting up at the near and far ends.  Caligula had talked me though much of the history of the villas of Tiberius as we bounced and bobbed throuh the water toward the island

“The villa was an extension from a central grotto and he had the cave tuned into a giant dining room”

There are many roman villas to visit on the island  as this is where Tiberius made his home – Villa Jovis is the main one and most popular
