1979: A woman and her three year old daughter live alone in Tokyo
Territory of Light (1979) is the luminous story of a young woman, living alone in Tokyo with her three-year-old daughter. Its twelve, stand-alone fragments follow the first year of the narrator’s separation from her husband.
There is one apartment block in the city where the woman and her child live, alone and lonely:
The apartment had windows on all sides
I spent a year there, with my little daughter, n the top floor of an old four -storey office building. We had the whole fourth floor to ourselves, plus the rooftop terrace. At street level there was a camera shop; the second and third floors were both divided into two rented offices.”
The third floor above them remains empty when she lives there and the woman admits she goes up there when her daughter has gone to sleep and she feels as if she’s in a secret chamber , unknown to anyone.
Tokyo does not really feature much in the novel but they do live close to a station as the apartment rattles from time to time
