2000s: Murder comes to a sleepy town….but who knows what?
Ellery Hathaway was tortured and raped by a serial killer when she was a teenager, but rescued before he could kill her. Fourteen years later, with a new identity in sleepy town where a bike theft makes the newspapers, locals have been disappearing, and Ellery has been receiving strange messages hinting that the culprit knows all about what happened to her all those years ago, and that she might well be next on their list. Desperate, she contacts the one person she knows will believe her story…
The small fictional town in Massachusetts not far from Boston. Sam used to work in the police in the city before working in the small town position in Woodbury as Chief of police. He’s become accustomed to being the smartest cop in the room.
Ellery is on the only female police officer on team of eight:
“She had chosen this quiet town because it was so removed from the big cities filled with thousands of people. A few of the guys at the station would sit around during the slow times , which to e fair was most of the time, and talk about what they should do if a major crime ever hit sleepy little Woodbury. A bank robbery, maybe, as if ever anyone would come to their tiny downtown, with its pharmacy, post office and handful of shops, thinking he could hit the local bank for a million bucks.”
“The average family in Woodbury was poor in cash but rich in land” This is the town where everyone knows each other, where the sense of community is strong and goes back years. Where lives of one person are tightly interwoven with another. This is a community where girls have been murdered on a particular date. Fear walks amongst them.
