3AD: Will he make it to the Last Hour?
A lone figure stands silhouetted atop the Mausoleum of Hadrian. Behind him, the sun is setting over the centre of the known world. Far below, the river is in full flood. The City of Rome lies spread out before him on the far bank.
He is alone and unarmed, without money or friends, trapped in a deadly conspiracy at the heart of the Empire. The City Watch has orders to take him alive; other, more sinister, forces want him dead. As the day dies, he realises he has only 24 hours to expose the conspirators, and save the leader of the world.
He must run, bluff, hide and fight his way across the Seven Hills. He must reach the Colosseum, and the Emperor.
He must make it to The Last Hour.
The Mausoleum of Hadrian, usually known as Castel Sant’Angelo, is a towering cylindrical building. It was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family.
What a place to start a cat and mouse chase across Rome as the lone figure tries to escape from this conspiracy and to save himself before the close of the games the next day.
The chase takes the reader deep into the heart of Rome, – this is a grimy, dirty city yet with cobbled streets and small alleyways exudes a different kind of charm. The Mausoleum of Hadrian for example, more recognizable now as being the Castel Sant’Angelo makes the ornate city sights shine. Imagine what the city of Rome would have looked like back then! There are so many sites today which exude the magic and history of that time.
But this is a city where there is a conspiracy to assassinate the Emperor. This lone figure has only until sunset the next day to prevent this happening.
So, across the Roman countryside he goes – across the Seven Hills – the Roman countryside
The showdown is at the iconic Colloseum- “He must reach the Colosseum, and the Emperor. He must make it to the last hour”
