What you need to know before your trail

Undercover ops are always dangerous, but DC Constance Fairchild never expected things to go this wrong.

Returning to their base of operations, an anonymous office in a shabby neighbourhood, she finds the bloodied body of her boss, and friend, DI Pete Copperthwaite. He’s been executed – a single shot to the head.

In the aftermath, it seems someone in the Met is determined to make sure that blame for the wrecked operation falls squarely on Con’s shoulders. She is cut loose and cast out, angry and alone with her grief… right until the moment someone also tries to put a bullet through her head.

There’s no place to hide, and no time to cry.

James Oswald's London

James Oswald’s London

Welcome to the James Oswald version of London!

“I’m in a quiet courtyard at the end of d dark alley, tucked away in a forgotten part of the city center. You don’ t have to go far to find hipster cafes, old Victorian pubs and al the other stuff the tourist board loves about London, but this is well hidden”

Fairchild is working for the Met police, this is the version of London seen through their eyes, those undercover eyes which tell you to look around a  building before you enter, always travel on public transport and be alert at all times.

She works in a  team of officers in an open plan office which seems to create more problems than it solves.

She sees the city in a way that keeps her wanting to be at the centre of it:

I’ve always loved the buzz of London life, the energy. there’s always something happening, some drama unfolding. And the people, most of the people, are great. As melting pots go. it’s bubbling away. “
