2000s: Is the Queensland town of Crimson Lake the perfect place to disappear?
2000s: Is the Queensland town of Crimson Lake the perfect place to disappear?
When former detective Ted Conkaffey is wrongly accused of abducting a teenage girl, he hopes the Queensland town of Crimson Lake will be the perfect place to disappear.
But nowhere is safe from the girl’s devastated father. Dale Bingley plans to take brutal revenge – and if Ted can’t find the real abductor, he’ll be the first casualty.
Meanwhile, on the beer-soaked floor of a nearby roadside shack, two young bartenders lie dead. As the homicide investigation unravels, Ted and his unlikely ally private detective Amanda Pharrell are brought in to assist on the case.
While Ted fights to clear his own name, their hunt for the killer draws them into a violent dance with evil.
They have one shot at redemption. It just might cost them their lives…
A fictional outback town in the middle of nowhere it would seem. Firmly in Queensland of course, but the place isn’t even really on the map:
“It wasn’t that I’d chosen CrimsonLake as my hideaway by throwing a dark at a map. I’d simply headed north from Sydney with my belongings in the car and panic at the back of my throat, certain only that I couldn’t stay where I was…..”
The place and landscape in this part of the world is carefully crafted from the humidity in the nearby rainforest to the grunts of the crocodiles hiding beneath the murky waters. It’s dark, damp, humid and full of mystery.
Marina Point, Palm Cove and Barron Gorge are on the map as these are of similar landscape and temperature in the north of Queensland like Crimson Lake itself

After reading Crimson Lake I was dying to read this and I wasn’t disappointed! Cracking thriller with a hot and humid landscape to crank up that tension and uncomfortable situations.
I just love Amanda and Ted – the two Private Investigators in Crimson Lake who have interesting backgrounds and an interesting partnership. don’t worry if you haven’t read bookone, there’s enough here to keep you happy but still want to go back to Crimson Lake anyway which you should.
It’s now Ted in the spotlight here and having the tables turned proves to be very interesting indeed. It’s a very tragic crime and interesting to see how the accused acts and feels as well as those on the other side of the fence so to speak.
What was particularly interesting and gripping here was teh fact that the rapist who had committed the crime had kept a diary and that was both uncomfortable to read yet fascinating all at once. Getting an insight into what makes someone do this -seeing all sides of the case was like being at the front of the courtroom. As evidence comes by, Candice handles everything with ease.
That’s not the only crime involved here either. There’s also a murder in a bar. A double one to be precise.
Both this and the rape accusation create a drama filled with tension and humid rage. The setting is a character in itself and the whole novel is an expertly crafted read.
Cunning and intrepid these Foxes aren’t they?
