The Island

Why a Booktrail?

2000s: This summer, four women are hoping to escape their troubles . . .

  • ISBN: 978-0316201179
  • Genre: Fiction

What you need to know before your trail

Birdie is organising a wedding, though her own marriage is falling apart. Her sister India is running away from her first chance of happiness in a long time, while her daughter Tate is running to something, but what that is, she doesn’t yet know. And then there’s Chess, who is just a mystery that none of the family know if they will ever unravel.

Gathering together for the first time in years in a ramshackle house with no running water on a remote island, the women settle into a routine.

But just how long can they hide from the secrets, lies and tragedy they have left behind?

Travel Guide

Nantucket

Even from afar the island looks like a dream for a holiday!

“A summer on Nantucket was the answer all the way around.”

Nantucket Harbour

There is a crush of people on the wharf – those disembarking, those picking up house guests, tourists wandering the shops, hungry couple in search of lunch. Nantucket is always busy! With Brant Lighthouse in the background, this really is the place to relax, take a stroll and read a book (ie this one!)

Main street

The shop for restaurants and shops. Take a bike like the rest of the islanders seem to use. Did you know you don’t even need a car on Nantucket? It’s too charming for cars! And too charming for tents apparently as you’re not allowed to camp anywhere on the island.

Siasconset

The area of the island where the market and shops are located.  In the 19th century, there was a whaling station present in the village. In 1877 Edward Underhill from Wolcott, New York bought land in the village and constructed cottages in the fashion of the original fishing shacks and then rented them to summer tourists.

History of the island

There’s a lot of tradition on the island with the Jethro Coffin House  and the Lightship basket museum which is a place dedicated to baskets crafted by local men stationed on offshore lightships.
