What you need to know before your trail

Living in the small prairie town of Argue, Saskatchewan, during the Depression, the Loney children are barely getting by. Their father can usually be found at the bar, and their stepmother is pious and bitter. Left to fend for themselves, they find a way to survive with the help of some unexpected allies, including a couple of watchful ghosts.

Saskatchewan, Canada during WWII

Argue is a fictional town

This is a look into the heart and soul of a small Saskatchewan town during the war. This is a heartbreaking read about the Loney children or is it the lonely children, for they are abandoned and unloved. They have to fend for themselves whilst their stepmother who is supposed to be looking after them skips town. It’s winter as well so the harshness is even more exposed and dangerous than it might be otherwise.

There are ghosts, regret and child abuse so maybe more of a YA book than a children’s one! Of all the Christian townspeople in the town, only one priest, the teacher, and a black man will help them. A question of humanity in war time.
