What you need to know before your trail

Having resigned from Bishkek Murder Squad, Akyl Borubaev is a lone wolf with blood on his hands. Then the Minister of State Security promises Akyl his old life back . . . if Akyl finds his vanished mistress. The beautiful Natasha Sulonbekova has disappeared in Dubai with information that could destroy the Minister’s career.

But when Borubaev arrives in Dubai – straight into a scene of horrific carnage – he learns that what Natasha is carrying is worth far more than a damaged reputation. Discovering the truth plunges him into a deadly game that means he might never return to Kyrgyzstan . . . at least, not alive.

Travel Guide

Dubai

The Dubai Akyl encounters is not so much the place of luxury that it is thought to be and indeed is for many visitors. Gone are the consumer brands, overwhelming consumerism, and the glistening glass and steel skyscrapers. The Dubai in this novel shows the shadows and the dark corners behind that glitz. Delve down into the seedy underbelly of the city, witness the poverty of trapped and abused women, and the shocking reality for those who live in its poverty..

A note about Dubai from the author:

After almost two decades living in the UAE, I know Dubai is one of the safest, most crime-free cities in the world. It’s rulers, police and people go to immense lengths to protect and serve everyone who lives there. No city, wealthy or poor, is entirely without crime but Dubai serves as a model of safety and security.

Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan  is referred to in the novel since this is where the Inspector hails from. But a quick note on the country. It was formally part of the Soviet Union, until the country declared independence in 1991. This should have signaled freedom but reality did not quite match the dream if this book is to believed. There’s enough political corruption, cheap drugs and poverty around to give you the full picture in Inspector Akyl Borubaev’s version at least.
