2000s: A New York chef heads to Thailand to look for good food and good women
When New York chef Frank Visakay traded in the sweaty heat of the restaurant kitchen for the glorious tropical heat of Thailand, he thought he had found paradise. Not only was the lifestyle laid back, the food delicious and the beers chilled but he was even attracting the attention of beautiful Thai women. Or so he thought. With Jasmine Fever, Visakay offers a series of revelations about his and his fellow expatriates relationships with Thai bargirls. And, as we learn from one of the eponymously named stories, perhaps he is looking for love in all the wrong places
Sounds nice but Jasmine Fever is not a love of the country. “It’s like getting malaria and dengue at the same time. Comes on all at once and there’s no much you can do about it”
The problem is that Rawai is a sleepy little town. Not much going on here. The action starts in Patong and runs down the hill to Karon then Kata. By the time it gets to Chalong and Rawai, there’s nothing happening. You can shoot off a cannon in the streets at night and not hit anything.
Many of the stories are set in the small town of Rawai where it seems to rain a lot given that two of the stories are entitled Rain in Rawai and ‘More Rain in Rawai’
Destination : Thailand, Phuket, Rawai Author/Guide: Frank Visakay Departure Time: 2000s
