2007 onwards: The search for Madeline McCann by her mother
‘The decision to publish this book has been very difficult, and taken with heavy hearts … My reason for writing it is simple: to give an account of the truth … Writing this memoir has entailed recording some very personal, intimate and emotional aspects of our lives. Sharing these with strangers does not come easily to me, but if I hadn’t done so I would not have felt the book gave as full a picture as it is possible for me to give. As with every action we have taken over the last five years, it ultimately boils down to whether what we are doing could help us to find Madeleine. When the answer to that question is yes, or even possibly, our family can cope with anything … Nothing is more important to us than finding our little girl.’
A small sleepy town in the Algarve popular with tourists.
Madeleine McCann , aged 3 at the time, disappeared on the evening of 3 May 2007 from her bed in a holiday apartment. She has still not been found.
She had been left with her siblings – two year old twins – asleep in their ground-floor apartment whilst the parents joined their friends, also parents with kids in the neighbouring apartments. They told police later that they checked on their children every 30 minutes. When Kate went at 10pm, she noticed Madeline had gone.
The restaurant was on the holiday complex some 55 metres away but it was not an enclosed site and members of the public could access the apartments easily. The police were called and the investigation began. The parents and the investigation have both been criticized.
No trace of Madeline was ever found.
