At the age of twenty-three, Bear Grylls became one of the youngest Britons to reach the summit of Mount Everest. At extreme altitude youth holds no advantage over experience, and it is generally acknowledged that younger climbers have more difficulty coping with the adverse effects of mountaineering. Nevertheless, only two years after breaking his back in a freefall parachuting accident, Bear Grylls overcame severe weather conditions, fatigue, dehydration and a last-minute illness to stand on top of the world’s highest mountain. Facing Up is the story of his adventure, his courage and humour, his friendship and faith.

Mount Everest

1924
The 1924 expedition resulted in one of the greatest mysteries on Everest: George Mallory and Andrew Irvine made a final summit attempt on 8 June but never returned. Did they ever reach the top? Mallory’s body was found in 1999.
1953 First assent
Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary made the first official ascent of Everest in 1953, using the southeast ridge route.The 1996 blizzard
1996 Blizzard
On May 10 and 11, 1996, eight people were caught in a blizzard and died on Mt. Everest during summit attempts making this the deadliest year on Mount Everest until only recently.
April 2015
There was an earthquake-triggered avalanche when a huge earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck Nepal.
