the novel takes a look at the religious and cultural aspects of life within the communities there. Zaq has a prison background and working delivering building supplies for Mr Brar. Mr Brah is Sikh and his daughter has ran off for a Muslim and that goes against all their beliefs and traditions.
“Zaq had been away for five years and though some things had changed, the sights, sounds and smells of Southtall were essentially the same. The brightly coloured sari shops and glittering Indian Jewellers were still there in all their spangly glory, even if some of the names had changed.”
And it’s not just the religious aspects, the Sikh/Muslim differences which colour the novel. It’s awash with the food, language and the sense of community . And there’s plenty of language and sayings sprinkled through the text to further make this feel as authentic as being there yourself.
