What you need to know before your trail

Kate loves her family more than anything, but recently she has started to feel invisible. Lying awake at three a.m. as her husband snores, panicking about shopping lists, birthday parties, and the school bake sale…

She finds herself in the kitchen, gulping water, staring at a postcard of the Eiffel Tower from Shannon, her best friend.

Paris, with its red wine, slippery cobbles and curly lampposts. Where the scent of freshly-baked croissants hangs in the air, and Kate last remembers feeling like herself.

The postcard is a year old. It has just one line on it: When are you coming?

Travel Guide

Paris

The author drew on much of her real life experience when writing this novel. She ran away to Paris at the age of twenty nine, leaving her job and boyfriend to move into a an apartment on her own in Montparnasse.

She attended a language school in Rue Victor Hugo every morning and spend the res of the time wandering around the city and discovering her new home.

Arriving at the gare du nord

The toilets at Gare du Nord were on a par with a dystopian sci-fi film.

Gare du Nord at midday was a malestrom of bodies and noise and other unpleasant smells.”

How to find your way around the city?

“there were pharmacies on every street in Paris. Each one advertising some super cream that would remove cellulite from our thighs and the last twenty years of your life.”

But when all is said and done

The woman on the train had been right: Paris was beautiful. Every street they drove along looked like a scene from the kind of black and white photography you would find on a restaurant wall.

The streets were full of people: well-dressed, beautiful people. As they drove around the Arc de Triomphe and up the wide avenue of the Champs-Elysees, Laura wanted to be with them…”
