She finds herself in the kitchen, gulping water, staring at a postcard of the Eiffel Tower from Shannon, her best friend.
Paris, with its red wine, slippery cobbles and curly lampposts. Where the scent of freshly-baked croissants hangs in the air, and Kate last remembers feeling like herself.
The postcard is a year old. It has just one line on it: When are you coming?
The author drew on much of her real life experience when writing this novel. She ran away to Paris at the age of twenty nine, leaving her job and boyfriend to move into a an apartment on her own in Montparnasse.
She attended a language school in Rue Victor Hugo every morning and spend the res of the time wandering around the city and discovering her new home.
The toilets at Gare du Nord were on a par with a dystopian sci-fi film.
Gare du Nord at midday was a malestrom of bodies and noise and other unpleasant smells.”
