1900s: A man sets off on an odyssey to North Africa and gets more than he bargained for.
When George Wilson is struck by the tragic death of his childhood sweetheart and fiancee, he set off on an odyssey, which leads him to North Africa. During his stay, he is duped into being a `mule’ and finds himself sentenced in Spain for drug smuggling. George is released from prison and in a very unsettled frame of mind, he enlists in the French Foreign Legion….
During George’s service in the French Foreign Legion he is posted to Algeria during the period of the Algerian War of Independence. He becomes disillusioned over the ethics of the hostilities and his indecision of thoughts makes him sympathetic towards the Algerian Cause. Fate makes up his mind for him when an act of gallantry to an Algerian girl and her brother, leads him to taking up arms with the Algerian Freedom Fighters.
The Foreign Legion was primarily used, as part of the Armée d’Afrique, to protect and expand the French colonial empire during the 19th century. It also fought in most of the French wars including the Franco-Prussian War, World War I and World War II. It has remained an important part of the French Army despite the dismantling of the French colonial empire, and the loss of the Foreign Legion’s base, Algeria.
