2004: The illustrated diary of a travelling artist
Riding the international success of Blankets, Craig Thompson sets out on a tour across Europe and Morocco, promoting the various European editions of his book and beginning research for his next graphic novel, Habibi. Carnet de Voyage is a gorgeous sketchbook diary of his travels as he finds intellectual and spiritual stimulation during the day-to-day work of being an author.
From wandering around Paris and Barcelona between events, to navigating markets in Fez and fleeing tourist traps in Marrakesh, we see glimpses of each place…
This is a travel logue drawn in ink and sketched with love and care.
There’s desert landscapes and crowded street scenes
But it’s the people-travelers passing through, the friends and lovers he meets along the way, who make this story what it is.
Highlights:
Marrakech – The camel journey he undertakes in Marrakech and out towards the desert. Camels regurgitate their food, and both pass wind and poop regularly. The way in which Berber women can seemingly carry any amount of clothes and equipment on their backs..
Fez – there is literally blood running through the streets as they decapitate chickens in the street.
Switzerland – The International Book Expo. Spain – the variety of Barcelona from the beaches to the artistic buildings.
The journey is there to discover for yourself. All is illustrated and documented along the way.
