Travel Guide

Travel to Morocco BookTrail style

The locations are varied and widespread. Ally trails across Marrakech, Casablanca and Essouria on her search for the truth and during her romantic relationship with Omar.

Zitoune, the mountain village and the site of the wonderfully sounding waterfalls is fictional but some 3 hours on a bus trip from Marrakech. There are some sights here including alligators and crocodiles. There are some people practicing their English too when they hear Ally.

Atlas Mountains

Omar is Amazigh, which is somewhat less socially acceptable than being Arab in Morocco, it would seem. The story delves a bit into the prejudices and problems that plaque Moroccan society. There are many cultural differences between Omar and Ally of course. The novel also explains the life of these people, how communities survive on several jobs and hawking good in the market, as well as some of them getting involved in more salubrious trades.

Essaouira

Famed for being where Jimi Hendrix lived and this is woven into the plot for more cultural links. The nearby Rif Mountains are where Omar’s family grow illegal drugs however. Addy and Omar visit many places here including the remparts and the fort.

Casablanca

There are lots of interesting art facts here. The Hassan II Mosque where the King is the only one to be allowed to walk on the glass floor. The art of Zellige, glazed tiles, is interesting and it takes years apparently!
