Ironbridge is a town on the River Severn, at the heart of the Ironbridge Gorge, in Shropshire
It is known as the place where the Industrial Revolution was born as it was the place where Abraham Darby perfected the technique of smelting iron with coke, in Coalbrookdale, allowing much cheaper production of iron. The truth is that the Industrial Revolution started in many places around the same time.
Ironbridge takes its name from the cast iron bridge which opened in 1781. IT has been at the forefront of industry ever since and this steel and iron works industry and the struggles of working within in are clearly and realistically evoked in the novel. The differences between rich and poor, the haves and the have nots is particularly interesting .
In 1986 Ironbridge became part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site
