Five books perfect for Mother’s Day set in England
There is a very special day this weekend. A day to celebrate mothers and mother figures. So what better time than this Travel Tuesday to celebrate some places where you could take your mother. Maybe there’s something she’d like to see or someone she’d like to meet?
Mother’s Day in books
The Last Village – North East England
This is a story about woman across the generations – this time a woman and her grandmother. Anna Charles knows nothing of her grandmother’s life and then later discovers the truth behind an enduring love. The setting is a lovely part of the North East coast so that would be a lovely place to take your mother or grandmother for a walk around the lighthouse and a cup of tea looking out over the Marsden Rock and the sea….
The Newcomer – Cornwall
Take your mum to Cornwall with this lovely read. Fern Britton writes as she comes across on the telly. All warm and cosy. This story is set in a fictional village but is clearly inspired by the author’s love of Cornwall and her favourite town of St Dominick. There’s someone new in the village, and all curtains are twitching.
The Age of MisAdventure – Brighton and England
There’s a lot of places you could go with your mum this Sunday but then she might just decide to spread her wings and decide it’s time to take time out from the family and think of herself for a change. Give her this novel for a few wacky ideas! In this novel, three generations of Turner women head off on a very unusual road trip. You never know where you might end up if your mother reads this!
Queenie Malone’s Paradise Hotel – Brighton
The very blurb of this book states: “Mothers and daughters … their story can be complicated … but it can also turn out to have a happy ending.” Tilly’s childhood is shattered when her mother sends her away from the only home she’d ever loved to boarding school. Many years later, she’s determined to find out why….
Wouldn’t it be nice to treat your own mum to a few nights in a paradise hotel somewhere?
And now for the sad one…
How to Be Brave – England and the Atlantic Ocean
This novel sums up what motherhood means in many ways. Mum Natalie has to do what she can to help her young daughter Rose come to terms with her illness ( diabetes) so she starts by sharing the story of Natalie’s grandfather Colin who also endured a life changing experience in the hope that it will help them both see how someone else in her family endured a major challenge.
Enjoy your travels where ever you go this Mother’s Day!
