Welsh artist Sara Llewellyn’s husband and young son are killed by chance during the shooting of a wealthy Italian in London. The killer disappears and Sara’s pain and grief drive her to the edge of madness. She hides away as her life spins out of control until she meets a Canadian academic researching his Welsh roots. He helps her find some balance and light and provokes a positive start to her recovery. She goes to Italy alone to find answers and is drawn into a world of art, culture, beauty and betrayal that leads to a shattering discovery at the explosive climax of the Palio in Siena.
The locations in this novel are mainly the artistic piazzas and glorious streets of Siena. This is the place for artists to come and the themes of art run through the novel. You can understand someone coming here to find themselves in a world of art, culture and historical intrigue.
The novel also features the famous Palio horse race. This takes place in the main square, Piazza del Campo, twice a year in July and August.
During the race, the jockeys ride bareback and race three laps of the piazza. The square is relatively small for this so the race takes all of 90 seconds or so, during which time the jockeys have to try and stay on their horses as they race around the tight turns of the square.
