Mercy River and its surrounding county are fictional, largely so that I could toy with jurisdictions and bad behavior on the part of law enforcement without getting real police on my tail. But the Oregon countryside described in the novel is very real.

The counties of Wheeler and Wasco and Deschutes provide most of the dramatic scenery for Van’s latest adventure.

Pronghorn – fictional but based on the very real ghost town of Antelope. The huge butte nearby is Smith Rock – considered the birthplace of modern sport climbing in America.
