1940s: The war brings atrocities that have effects for years to come…
One sultry evening in Kowloon, Dr Rowena Rossiter and Sister Alice Huntley are off-duty and in search of fun – little knowing that their world is on the brink of collapse.
That night, Rowena will meet two men who will fight for her heart for the next four years. ConnorO’Connor, the rebellious Irish soldier, who will woo and then lose her, and Kim Pheloung. Immensely rich and the most beautiful man Rowena has ever seen, he is also the most ruthless, with a sinister need possess and control.
When the Japanese invasion leaves this previously strong and independent woman raped and broken, who will succeed in claiming Rowena’s body and soul? And will she ever learn to love the child born of that terrible Christmas Day?
This is a novel set during war times so be prepared for some horrific events and scenes including assault and abuse.
Kowloon/Hong Kong
Kowloon is the name for the northern part of Hong Kong across Victoria Harbour. It used to be a separate city, but Britain returned it to China with the rest of the colony in 1997. The name Kowloon is now synonymous with shopping, arts and entertainment. Nathan Road runs right through it.
“The real China. Kowloon walled city. KWC for short.”
During the novel, the war is ongoing and the news comes in that Japan has bombed Pearl Harbour in Hawaii, bringing the Americans into the war. “Rumour has it the Japanese are heading this way.”
Shanghai
The city where the rest of the story is set. It’s the story of war here, of advancing Japanese soldiers but the way to it is by sea voyage so they miss driving along narrow roads manned by them. They say they have little education and a peasant background. They are known to kill people whether they have a pass or not.
