The Floating world
The floating world of the title is the reference to ‘entertainment world of gangsters, brothels and entertainment of all dubious kinds.
This is a visit, a tour, an immersion into Japan’s dark underbelly. Gangsters and the underbelly really make this an experience where violence is the key. The Yakuza are notorious for violence and torture and it’s an experience even to meet them in the pages of a novel.
Art world
At the start of each chapter of the book, there are images, from museums, galleries and printmakers which depict elegant Japanese art works and really help to place and ground this novel in the culture and language of the country.
