2000s: The sleepy village of Featherbank has a dark past
If you leave a door half-open, soon you’ll hear the whispers spoken . . .
Still devastated after the loss of his wife, Tom Kennedy and his young son Jake move to the sleepy village of Featherbank, looking for a much-needed fresh start.
But Featherbank has a dark past. Fifteen years ago, a twisted serial killer abducted and murdered five young boys.
Until he was finally caught, the killer was known as ‘The Whisper Man’.
Of course, an old crime need not trouble Tom and Jake as they try to settle in to their new home.
Except that now another boy has gone missing. And then Jake begins acting strangely.
He says he hears a whispering at his window . . .
A fictional village somewhere in England. It’s the place you would go to to escape life, to rest and relax and to make a fresh start.
Tom arrives at Featherbank with seven-year-old Jake in tow to escape the memories of their recently deceased wife and mother. It seems to be the perfect place to start again. Away from the memories and sadness. They move into a new house which seem a bit sinister but it’s new and their new home.
“We were going to be safe here.
We were going to be happy.
And for the first week, we were.”
Twenty years ago, a string of murders rocked Featherbank. Little boys went missing in the dead of night and were found dead later. Frank Carter got a life sentence and earned himself the nickname ‘The Whisper Man’ after his sinister method of whispering at the doors and windows of his victims in order to lure them outside.
I am so so pleased I read this. I feel brave. No, wait, I AM brave as after Jo Nesbo’s The Snowman I vowed never to read a scary book at night again but I broke my vow as this one sounded so good.
IT is. BOY IS IT CHILLING! A child taking to an imaginary friend, a father seeing a strange man in the garden and then there are those whispers at the door. Jeepers. Why do I do this to myself?
Because there are fine books like this I’d miss otherwise, that’s why. It’s set in the fictional Featherbank and just as well as I would never go there if it were real. What can I say about this book without giving it away? You have to read this blind and maybe with headphones blasting out music so you don’t hear those whispers.
Impressively chilling and OMG creepy.
