What you need to know before your trail

One of the best-loved adventure stories ever written, Treasure Island’s timeless tale of pirates, lost treasure maps, mutiny and derring-do has appealed to generations of readers ever since Robert Louis Stevenson penned it in 1881 with the claim: “If this don’t fetch the kids, why, they have gone rotten since my day.” But more than just a children’s classic, the novel is considered to be one of the greatest feats of storytelling in the English language, with characters such as the unforgettable Long John Silver becoming part of the cultural consciousness. Treasure Island is a coming-of-age story that will captivate both adults and children for as long as stories are told

Travel Guide

Travel to Treasure Island – is it possible?

Robert Louis Stevenson published Treasure Island book in 1883. Everyone has always wanted to know where the island was, and where is was inspired by.

In 1750, more than fifty chests of silver pieces of eight were stolen from a Spanish galleon at Ocracoke, North Carolina. They were taken to the West Indies where most of it was buried on Norman Island in the British Virgin Islands. Norman Island is largely thought to have influenced the setting of Treasure island. Carribean islands especially St Kitts where the authors great grandfather died is also thought to have influenced the setting.

There is a real life treansure island in Florida  – this time it was named after the novel! How wonderful is that!?
