What you need to know before your trail

Every Monday, 49-year-old Ellie looks after her grandson Josh. She loves him more than anyone else in the world. The only thing that can mar her happiness is her husband’s affair. But he swears it’s over now, and Ellie has decided to be thankful for what she’s got.

Then one day, while she’s looking after Josh, her husband gets a call from that woman. And just for a moment, Ellie takes her eyes off her grandson. What happens next will change her life forever.

Because Ellie is hiding something in her past.

And what looks like an accident could start to look like murder…

Travel Guide

Travel to Oxfordshire and Bristol

Locations are vague and mentioned in passing in this story but the sense of moving around, starting over and moving from one place to another is a  strong theme. One character moves from Bristol down to Cornwall and moves around even then to start a new life, hiding away from their past. The sense of freedom and entrapment are strong as the need to belong.

Bristol is evoked better than Oxfordshire and Cornwall. Cornwall is fleeting and acts as a background. Oxfordshire and the anonymous town where the couple live at the start is a mere starting point. It’s Bristol, with its useful transport links and places to see just what the homeless go through on a regular basis that really stands out. This is hard to read at some points – to see what people without homes have to go through on a regular basis, the various reasons for people being homeless in the first place and how mental health and people’s attitudes have such an impact on the root problems.
