Yet when Frei’s young cousin goes missing off the Norwegian coast and Thorkild is called in by the family to help find him, dead or alive, Thorkild cannot refuse. He owes them this.
Tormented by his past, Thorkild soon finds himself deep in treacherous waters. He’s lost his reputation – will he now lose his life?
Stavanger
The city is well evoked with its various neighbourhood, harbour, lakes and streets. The opening paragraph might make you want to avoid a certain street though! The case starts here where a mother is worried about her son, but we soon head north to the most remote part of the country….home of the Northern Lights…
Tromso
So far north and so cold, this distant landscape is evoked its all its chilly glory. There’s a body found up here and the small city with its famous bridge and island mentality is well explored. There’s a distinct difference between Stavanger and this small town but it turns out that even inthe coldest, darkest places, there’s been an increase in crime and drugs.
The windy island with its deserted lighthouse hides many gory secrets. The weather whips up the sea, slaps it against the land and brings dead bodies to the shore….
“The journey to the island runs through a steep-sided valley before the bumpy road returns us to the sea. On the way we pass the occassional postwar house clad in green, white or yellow fibre-cement weatherboards and corrugated iron roofs. Some still have light shining in the windows, and there are strips of furrowed fields, but most of them were abandoned and surrendered long ago to wind and weather.”
