A few weeks before the Toronto Zoo opened to the public in the summer of 1974, a group of elephants sailed across the ocean to Toronto, their new home. The numbers dwindled over the years due to health problems and breeding problems.
Elephants are often a problem for zoos given their size, health issues, care and breeding programs. They also need a lot of space and as the elephants get older, it’s too dangerous to move them.
