2000s: Alice Teale leaves school one day and is never seen again…
As usual, seventeen-year-old Alice Teale walked out of school at the end of a bright spring day.
Except she’s not been seen since.
Alice was popular and well-liked, and her boyfriend, friends and family are desperate to find her.
But when the police start asking questions, it becomes clear that almost everyone has something to hide.
Detectives Beth Winter and Lucas Black don’t know which way to turn – but then they receive a disturbing package.
Pages from Alice’s precious diary.
Who could have sent them? And what have they done with Alice?
Collemby, the former pit village where the novel is set, is fictional. The village is a shadow of its former self and suffers from poverty and a loss of identity ever since their mining heritage has disappeared. Its people are proud of their history and their town and are especially pleased that the local failing school has seen it fortunes turn around.
This is the school from which Alice Teale goes missing however. There are comparisons to the more wealthy and touristy towns of Seahouses, Tynemouth and Craster which is famous for its smoked kippers.
There’s a well-known pub in Collemby – the White House and theBlack Stallion – the latter is known as The Dirty Donkey how apparently!
