The place – the small town of Rabbit Back. The book club – a society which only special writers are selected to join
The lead character – children’s author Laura White, a figure skin to The Snow Queen is the one who chooses who gets to join the group. The new character – Ella is a literature teacher so at first seems the ideal character for the group. The plot – What is this secret book society? What is the ritual known as The Game and why are the words in the books starting to rearrange themselves?
Although the setting is Rabbit back a fictional town in Finland, the real setting is the magical realism of the book society. Finnish folklore and a Finnish snowy setting add to the mix and its a world we want to visit within our imaginations for a long while yet.
The town of Rabbit Back sounds like a very strange place indeed and as for the library. We would definitely be looking over our shoulders and touching the books with extreme caution. We’ve always thought that running your finger along the spines was like tickling a book or giving it a high five but we’re not sure we’d do it in this library.
There’s horror amongst the books too –
“From the corner of his eye, he saw a shadow. It was moving under the ice, rising towards him. The water was black, but the shadow was still blacker. He couldn’t quite make it out, but it came up quite close to him and tried to press against him, wanted to come into his arms.”
Then it whispered something in his ear in a blind black voice…
