What you need to know before your trail

Chief Inspector Mario Silva and his team have a heavy work load. There are a series of high-profile cases that they are investigating – including a suicide bomb and an assassination. Not sure if the two cases are related or not, but there is certainly something very wrong happening on Silva’s turf and he’s very troubled. To complicate matters further, there is a criminal with a grudge who has just been released from prison.

Travel Guide

The author of these Brazilian murder mysteries is certainly more than familiar with the country and its people. He has a passion for it  that comes from having a Brazilian wife and family, experience of living and working in the country getting under its skin.

The Brazil here however is not that on the tourist map -for this is a Brazil based on murder, mystery, revenge and hatred. In São Paulo, We meet a suicide bomber and join the investigation as Silva tries to work out the reasons why. With a look at the justice system in Brazil too  –

“In his world, the rich didn’t go to jail, Not In Brazil. Not even if they killed an unarmed penniless priest in the presence of a federal cop , as he had done.”

At almost the same time, we are thrust into the chaos of  Tiradentes Square in Curitiba – the capital of the Brazilian state of Parana, and a city without streetcars or a metro system. Gubernatorial candidate Plinio Saldano is killed along with others, in one of the largest gatherings that the police had ever seen –

“the largest ever to witness the assassination of a Brazilian Politician”

From Brazil, this takes on an international slant as the action transcends borders and terrorism becomes the ugly raw setting of the situation and landscape of the book. The death toll at an explosion in Argentina brings the violence and reality of that , firmly to the fore.

Of course among all the violence and the gruesome events we witness, there are some lighter moments of cultural insight – “babies attract Brazilians like flowers attract bees”

You’ll need the honey as the rest of the book by nature, isn’t so sweet.
