2008: A survivalist’s guide to mountain walking and what it offers the soul
In 1997, at the age of 24, Sarah lost her mother to breast cancer. Alone and adrift in the world, she very nearly gave up hope – but she’d made a promise to her mother that she would keep going no matter what. So she turned to the beautiful, dangerous, forbidding mountains of her native Scotland.
Sarah’s mother died when she was just 24. Imagine losing your mum at such a young age. She also lost the man she was going to marry when he was on an expedition in the Himalayas. She became a single parent, had a few failed relationships and felt her world was at an end.
What kept her going was her love of walking, the great outdoors and her beloved mountains of Scotland. She sought solace in the mountains and hills of her native country but soon wanted to venture further still. She headed to Africa and Nepal where she took her mother’s ashes to be beside those of the main she had loved.
What a pilgrimage and what a journey.
