What you need to know before your trail

Hemingway wrote this short novel when he was living in Key West and paying regular visits to Cuba before finally moving there in 1939.

Hemingway was himself a keen fisherman and this novel pays homage to his knowledge and experience of the fishing environment and skills involved.

The novel is set around the lifestyle of these fishermen in 1930s Florida Keys, north coast of Cuba and the Gulf Stream during the Great Depression which raged there at the time.

This novel is raw, tough, powerful and sad all at the same time.

Travel Guide

Cojimar, – a fishing port on the edge of Havana is apparently the inspiration behind the fishing village in another novel The Old Man and the Sea as it was where Hemingway often went on fishing trips on his boat El Pilar.

The Gulf Stream – Tortugas islands and the Loggerhead key lighthouse where they are to swap boats in order to travel further

Florida Keys – The  Hemingway home in Key West -907 Whitehead Street, Key West, Florida

Many places in the novel give an impression of the approach of the north coast of Cuba and the places the characters see as they approach Havana port. Places they see approaching Havana port -Rincon, Baracoa, Bacuranao, Cojimar.
