Black River by Will Dean
IF you haven’t read Will Dean then why now? Dark Pines and Red Snow are waiting for you to get to them. Black River is about to arrive in the literary world. Set in the fictional town of Gavrik, Tuva Moodyson is my favourite protagonist for many reasons. She is SUCH an interesting and complex character, is deaf so has a lot more to deal with than most people and she is determined to solve the cases she becomes involved in. This is some of the most atmospheric and gripping writing I’ve come across in some time. You NEED Tuva Moodyson in your life.
DUNEDIN, NEW ZEALAND
Containment by Vanda Symon
You would have to search hard to find a more gripping and unique crime series set in New Zealand. This is one where the setting is everything but then so too is the characterization and the plot. It’s the full crime package that’s for sure. The crimes are always linked to the setting and have that local feel to it – in this novel there’s a washed up goods container found on the beach, and looters have been trying for spoils. When a body is found however, then things get very dark in deed. Great main character, some of the best banter and conversation in a book that I’ve ever read, sassy and quirky writing and it’s a winner!
ANTARCTICA
Away with the Penguins by Hazel Prior
There are penguins in this book. Enough said.
The island in the novel might be fictional but Locket Island in the Antartic comes to live from the page. You are so going to want to go there! Magical journey awaits and the author has some very interesting snippets of information which she blends into the novel from her research. There is a good back story to this novel and it’s everything you hope it’s going to be. It put a smile on my face and I think it will yours too!
PARIS, NORWAY AND CANADA
Coming up for Air By Sarah Leipciger
On the banks of the River Seine in 1899, a young woman takes her final breath before plunging into the icy water. Although she does not know it, her decision will set in motion an astonishing chain of events…..wow… there’s not too much I an say about this as you have to go in blind and then experience this whirlwind of a read. All I’m going to say is that it leads to the story of how the CPR plastic model came to be…
Yes you heard that right. You have to read this for so many reasons but it’s a novel within a story wrapped in historical intrigue and it’s a must read!
ARMENIA
Three Apples Fell from the Sky by Narine Abgaryan
An unforgettable story of friendship and feuds in a remote Armenian mountain village. This is a very special read as it’s unique, slow moving and very poignant. There’s so much depth and warmth to this read. The people who live in such remote communities have special challenges – life there can be tough, food scarce and the way of life difficult. This is a novel which focuses on one group of people, and looks at their special bond, their personal struggles and their individual personalities.
Very unique, quirky and memorable.
